Cadmium Plating -
A surface coating of elemental cadmium, applied on metals by electrodeposition. Provides sacrificial corrosion protection to the base metal.
The disengagement of a driving tool from its mating recess upon the application of torque, usually the result of insufficient end load or worn/defective driver tool tip.
The introduction of carbon to the surface layer of ferrous alloys by heating the metal in contact with a suitablecarbonaceous material. Used to increase the surfacehardness of ferrous metals.
Case Hardening -
See Heat Treatment
Cetyl Alcohol -
An organic, fatty alcohol applied to fasteners as a lubricant.
A beveled surface on a component to eliminate a sharp corner.
Cherrylock® Rivet -
A locked-spindle blind rivet.
An elemental metal used as an alloying ingredient in alloy steels, stainless steels, or super alloys, to increase hardenability or corrosion resistance. Also used as an electroplate for corrosion protection.
Indicates the fit of mating male and female parts and the tolerance limits to be applied to the dimensional characteristics of each part.Thread (Specification) = MIL-S-8879, MIL-S-7742Hole (Specification) = NAS 618.
A covering which adheres to a surface by chemical means.
Cold Work -
Permanent deformation produced in a metal at a temperature lower than the recrystallization temperature.
A fastening component that is attached to a pin to clamp one or more pieces together and provide a permanent installation. Method of attachment may be by threading, swaging, forming or other means.
An inspection instrument which projects the magnified profile of a part onto a screen.
ComposiLok II® -
A high strength blind bolt for composite and metallic materials. Designed and manufactured by Monogram Aerospace Fasteners.
A high strength blind bolt for composite and metallic materials with a flush break-off. Designed and manufactured by Monogram Aerospace Fasteners.
Composite Material Fasteners -
Fasteners designed for use in sandwich panel, honeycomb panel or other composite materials.
Conversion Coating -
A type of chemical treatment applied to a fastener to form a protective coating over the metal surface, such as chromate conversion coating.
Core Bolt -
The externally threaded, central part of a blind fastener.
The deterioration of a metal by chemical or electrochemical reaction with its environment. Some specific types of corrosion are:
A drilled or bored, flat bottom hole which is usually concentric with another hole.
A conical depression at the entrance of a hole, usually to receive the head of a flush head fastener.
A clear break, either along grain boundaries or through grains or crystals (intra or intergranular).
The slow but continuous deformation of a material under prolonged stress.
Crest (thread) -
Inthread form, the ridge which constitutes the outermost surface of an external thread or the innermost surface of an internal thread.
Controlled distortion of a part; usually applied to threads to create a lock through interference with the mating thread.
Cross Drill -
The process of drilling a hole, or holes, in a fastener normal to its major axis, such as cotter pin holes and lock wire holes.
A spherical protrusion at the top of a fastener head.
Sub-normal temperature; generally considered to be below -259°F (-162°C), the liquefication temperature of methane.
