Failure Mode -
A description of the cause or the type of failure experienced by a specimen.
A mechanical device for holding two or more members in position with respect to each other.
A unique capability in some multi piece fastener assemblies which allows movement of a component within a fixed housing. The capability is useful in misaligned structures, or to ease tolerance controls in the location of mating holes. Example: floating plate nut (see nut).
The texture revealed by etching a metal surface or section showing direction of metal flow.
Flush Head -
A fastener head with a conical bearing surface designed for use in countersunk or dimpled structure.
A term used to describe the amount of recess or protrusion of one surface to another.
A metal surface defect caused by forming. Same as a lap.
Plastically deforming metal, usually hot, into desired shapes with compressive force, with or without dies.
The relative ease with which a metal can be shaped through plastic deformation.
Surface damage that results when there is relative motion between solid surfaces in contact under pressure.
